Beyond Society 5.0 and Toward a New Future of Society 5.1

Society 5.0, where Cyber Space and Physical Space Unite

In Society 5.0, where the cyber space and the physical space unite in a higher dimension to achieve both of economic development and social issue resolution, AI is supposed to analyze huge amounts of big data and feed the results back to humans through robotic technologies, bringing new value to industry and society. Although AI and cyberphysical systems, which are indispensable technologies for realizing Society 5.0, have made remarkable progress, their application and implementation to tackle real issues are still limited. The reasons include data problems (data size is not enough, ground truth is ambiguous), conflicts between machine learning and traditional engineering (sustained improvement is difficult, explainability is not enough), and difficulty in ensuring security.

Research and Development of "Tough" Cyberphysical AI Aiming for Social implementation

Tough Cyberphysical AI Research Center of Tohoku University was born with a goal of research and development of "tough" cyberphysical AI, that is, intelligence related to robots and IoTs that function stably in various harsh environments. AI Research Division develops embodied AI that is robust in unrestricted environments in the real world. Physical Research Division realizes tough work in the real world such as rescue robotics, extreme robotics, and autonomous navigation. HPC & Computing Module Research Division integrates high-performance computing such as supercomputers and quantum annealing computers with secure edge computing such as brain-like computing modules and FPGAs. Service Research Division implements traffic flow control, infrastructure inspection and assessment, and healthcare in the society.

Ecosystem for Open and Closed Innovations

Many companies and local governments collect data comprehensively thanks to the spread of IoT technologies. However, we are struggling with the decisions on how to create values from such data as well as the shortage of human resources for analysis and judgment. This center is aimed at realizing an ecosystem for open and closed innovations in which we carry out consultation for companies and local governments, combining multiple approaches developed in research divisions to configure multiple solutions, and co-creation and collaboration to derive optimal and implementable solutions. The core technologies born there will be grown to be implemented in the society through cooperation between industry, government, and academia. The center also contributes to human resource development for young researchers, through activities including international student research programs supported by corporate sponsors, practical technology education for students through project-based learning (PBL), and re-education of corporate engineers.
